Abanoub, the child martyr
History
Abanoub was born in the town of Nehisa (Coptic: ⲛⲁⲏⲥⲓ), today Kafr al-Abhar, in the Talqa district
He was the only son of his parents who raised him to fear God
They died when Abanoub was young
At the age of 12, Abanoub entered the church and heard a priest exhort his congregation to remain faithful during the persecution caused by the Roman Emperor Diocletian
Abanobu received the Holy Sacraments and prayed to God to lead him to the point where he could confess his faith in Jesus.
He returned home and immediately departed, giving all the gold, silver and clothes left by his father to the poor and needy
Then he went to Summernoud and walked along the riverbank
On the way, he had a vision of Archangel Michael, who told him that he would suffer in Samanad
He confessed the name of the Lord Christ before the governor Lucian
Abanoub also insulted Lucian's idol, which enraged the governor and ordered the child to be flogged
The soldiers beat Abanoub severely, but Archangel Michael miraculously healed him.
The next day, the governor took Abanoub on a boat to a town called Athlibis, and as punishment Abanoub was hung upside down from the mast
The soldiers began drinking and dancing with the ruler, punching Abanoub in the mouth
Blood was flowing from Abanoub's nose, but his soldiers were unexpectedly blinded and the ruler was paralyzed
The soldiers called Abanoub to pray for them, and he promised to become a Christian
Abanoub replied
"This will only happen in Athribis, and everyone there will know that there is no god but Christ
" [5] The angel of the Lord descends from heaven and frees Abanoub
and wiped away the blood that had fallen
A nose and mouth ran from him
A strong wind soon brought them to Athlibis
Upon reaching Athribis, the soldiers healed their wounds and took off their uniforms before the ruler of Athribis
The governor was furious and ordered them all to be killed
The governor of Athribis severely tortured Abanoub and sent him to the city of Alexandria
There he was tortured until he gave up his soul and received the crown of martyrdom
St
Julius El Akhfasi, who wrote a biography of St
Abanoub, was also present
He took Abanoub's body and sent her, along with some of his men, to Abanoub's hometown of Nehisa
