Habib Girgis was a prominent figure in the history of the Coptic Orthodox Church and education in Egypt. Born on January 18, 1876, in the village of Kafr Dawud, Girgis demonstrated exceptional academic abilities from a young age. His parents recognized his potential and supported his education, allowing him to excel in his studies.

 

Girgis received his early education in the village's primary school before moving to Cairo to pursue further studies. In Cairo, he attended the prestigious school of the Coptic Patriarchate, where he distinguished himself as a diligent student. His academic prowess earned him scholarships to study at prestigious institutions in Egypt and abroad.

 

Girgis traveled to France to pursue higher education, where he studied theology and philosophy at the University of Paris. He immersed himself in the intellectual and cultural milieu of Europe while maintaining a deep commitment to his Christian faith and Coptic heritage.

 

Upon returning to Egypt, Girgis dedicated himself to the service of the Coptic Orthodox Church and the education of its clergy. He recognized the need for modernization and reform within the church and sought to revitalize theological education to meet the challenges of the modern era.

 

In 1918, Girgis was appointed as the principal of the Coptic Clerical College in Cairo, a position he held for over three decades. Under his leadership, the college underwent significant reforms, emphasizing academic rigor, theological scholarship, and pastoral training. Girgis introduced modern teaching methods, expanded the curriculum, and fostered a spirit of intellectual inquiry among students.

 

One of Girgis' most enduring legacies is his contributions to Coptic hymnology and liturgical music. He devoted considerable effort to the preservation and revival of traditional Coptic hymns and chants, publishing numerous collections of hymns and composing new melodies inspired by ancient Coptic musical traditions.

 

Girgis' scholarly works, including theological treatises, hymnals, and textbooks, continue to be valued resources within the Coptic Orthodox Church and beyond. His writings reflect a deep theological insight, a profound spirituality, and a commitment to the renewal and enrichment of Coptic religious life.

 

Throughout his life, Habib Girgis remained a dedicated educator, theologian, and advocate for the spiritual and intellectual growth of the Coptic Orthodox community. Habib Girgis passed away on March 22, 1951, leaving behind a lasting legacy of scholarship, leadership, and faith.
