Hannah is a significant biblical figure whose story is primarily recounted in the First Book of Samuel in the Old Testament of the Bible. She is celebrated for her unwavering faith, her fervent prayers, and her role as the mother of the prophet Samuel.

 

Hannah lived during a tumultuous period in Israel's history when the nation was ruled by judges and experienced political and spiritual upheaval. She was married to Elkanah, a devout man from the tribe of Ephraim, who had two wives: Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah was barren, which caused her great distress and sorrow.

 

The narrative reveals Hannah's deep desire for a child and her anguish over her inability to conceive. Despite her pain, Hannah remained faithful to God and expressed her heartfelt petitions in prayer. On one occasion, while visiting the tabernacle at Shiloh, Hannah poured out her soul before the Lord, praying fervently for a son and vowing to dedicate him to God's service if her prayer were answered.

 

God heard Hannah's prayer and granted her request. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, whom she named Samuel, which means "heard by God." True to her vow, Hannah dedicated Samuel to the service of the Lord from his earliest years. After weaning him, she brought Samuel to the tabernacle at Shiloh and entrusted him to the care of Eli, the high priest.

 

Hannah's prayer of thanksgiving and praise, known as the "Song of Hannah" or "Hannah's Prayer," is recorded in the Bible (1 Samuel 2:1-10). In this beautiful hymn, Hannah exalts God's sovereignty, power, and faithfulness, celebrating His ability to lift up the lowly, to reverse fortunes, and to bring justice to the oppressed.
